Research Scholar Program for High School Students
The Research Scholar Program for High School Students offers the opportunity for high school teachers and students to perform research on the forefronts of polymer science and technology together with GARCIA faculty and staff. Students work as part of focused research teams and are taught to make original contributions of interest to the scientific community. In addition to entering national competitions, the students are encouraged to publish in refereed scientific journals and to present their results at national conferences.
Our goal is to convey to the students the excitement we enjoy daily in research. The program has no set time limits. Research is a lifetime learning experience, and we hope to remain a resource to our students long after "graduation".
Laboratory usage fee: $1550
Supply Kit included
Housing and meal plan program are available at applicant's expense. Prices for housing will be determined by Dormitory Authorities in May 2013

Research Experience for Undergraduates
Program Opportunities: Although the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, within which the Center is located, does not have a specialized undergraduate major, it administers the Engineering Science major. The Center has opportunities for undergraduate research assistants throughout the year.
A number of undergraduate students affiliated with the Center have served as mentors to high school students engaged in research. We give a high priority to ensuring that undergraduate students themselves receive appropriate guidance, including information about career options and prospects, as well as instruction.
Students are recruited into the REU program from the Howard Hughes Undergraduate Program, the Alliance for Minority Participation, the RAIRE program, the Engineering Honors College, and the Women in Science and Engineering programs at CUNY and Stony Brook. Summer REU students are recruited through advertisement on the Garcia MRSEC web site and the internal sources listed above.
The Garcia MRSEC also integrates research and education by hosting and providing laboratory facilities for students registered in courses involving design or having a polymer science component. In addition the MRSEC hosts undergraduate students enrolled in various industrial and off campus internship courses. REU sponsored undergraduate students participate fully in all phases of research which include publication and travel to conferences. In addition, the undergraduate students help develop our traveling polymer laboratory for the Junior High School Outreach Program.
Research Experience for Teachers
The Garcia MRSEC for Polymers, funded by the National Science Foundation for research and education on Polymer Engineering has four openings in the Research Experience for High School Teachers (RET) summer program. The summer program lasts from 7 weeks, starting the last week of June and pays a stipend of $5000. Candidates can work independently or join existing research groups doing research on polymer blends, composite materials, polymer/inorganic surfaces and interfaces, protein and DNA surface interactions, polymer recycling, polymer materials engineering, theoretical modeling, x-ray and neutron scattering at Brookhaven National Laboratory, electron, x-ray and scanning force microscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Candidates will publish in refereed research journals and attend professional conferences. The Garcia MRSEC also hosts a high school students summer scholar program where students are encouraged to enter national competitions. The candidates are encouraged to bring students or interact and mentor students in the program.
